What this retaining wall cost calculator covers
Wall blocks, optional caps, base gravel, drainage stone, waste, and installation labor for the wall you entered. Not a contractor bid.
A short landscape block wall usually sits near $20 to $50 per sq ft installed, or about $60 to $150 per linear foot for a 2 to 4 ft garden wall.
- If the live number is far outside $20 to $50 per sq ft, check the inputs. The default 3 ft sample is $28.88 per sq ft. Taller walls, tight access, and high-cost ZIP codes sit higher. Look at block price, labor rate, and whether caps are on before you treat a wild number as the job.
- Labor is priced on the wall face, not per block. Crews quote per square foot of visible face or per linear foot of run. This page uses those two bases so you can match a quote.
- Replace the defaults before you lock a budget. ZIP defaults scale a US planning baseline. Type supplier and installer prices. Excavation haul-off, drain pipe, geogrid, permits, and engineering sit on top of this total.
Check the default 20 x 3 ft wall
Reset puts back a 20 ft by 3 ft visible wall, one buried course, 6×16 blocks, cap on, 10% waste, and national-average prices. The live total should match this.
1. Wall face
20 ft x 3 ft = 60 sq ft of visible face. Buried courses do not add face area.
2. Blocks to buy
6 in blocks: 6 visible courses plus 1 buried. 15 blocks per course × 7 = 105 wall blocks, then 116 after 10% waste. Caps: 20, then 22 after waste.
3. Materials
116 × $4.50 = $522 wall blocks. 22 × $4 = $88 caps. 0.74 cu yd base gravel at $45 = $33.30. 2.59 cu yd drainage stone at $50 = $129.50. Materials = $772.80.
4. Labor and installed total
60 sq ft × $16 / sq ft = $960 labor. Installed cost = $772.80 + $960 = $1,732.80, shown as $1,733, or $28.88 per sq ft and $86.64 per linear foot.
Check the live number against these bands
The calculator is the better answer for your wall. These bands only tell you whether that result is in the right neighborhood.
| Cost item | Planning range | Lower when | Higher when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed cost per sq ft | $20 to $50 / sq ft | Under 3 ft, easy access, common 6×16 blocks | Taller walls, tight access, extra corners, high-cost labor |
| Installed cost per linear ft | $60 to $150 / linear ft for a 2 to 4 ft wall | Lower walls, because each foot of run has less face | Taller walls, extra buried courses, higher labor markets |
| Landscape wall block | $3.50 to $7.00 / block | Basic gray block bought by the pallet nearby | Small orders, larger 8×18 units, delivery, shortages |
| Installation labor | $12 to $25 / sq ft or $35 to $80 / linear ft | Open site, straight run, larger job | Minimum charges, steps, corners, quotes tied to height |
When not to use this number
This is a US-dollar planning total for a segmental landscape block wall. Switch pages when the job is different.
- Ordinary CMU or cinder block wall. Garage, fence, or foundation walls use mortar, optional grout, and masonry labor. Use the concrete block wall cost calculator.
- Timber, poured concrete, or natural stone. Those systems do not use this block, cap, base, and drainage takeoff.
- Walls taller than 4 ft, or any wall that needs a stamp. Most US codes treat 4 ft as the permit and engineering line. The page still shows a planning total. It does not design geogrid, soil, or setback.
- Quotes outside the United States. ZIP defaults and dollar prices will not match an Australia, UK, New Zealand, or Canada contractor quote.
How the installed cost is built
Materials are the wall blocks, caps, base gravel, and drainage stone for the wall you entered. Labor is then added on the visible face or the wall run.
- Wall face and block count
- face = length × visible height; courses = ceil(visible height / block height) + buried courses
- Base gravel and drainage stone
- base = length × base width × base depth; drainage = length × total block height × drainage depth
- Installed total
- installed = materials + max(rate labor, minimum labor charge)
Where the numbers come from
Planning defaults reviewed September 2026
- Material takeoff. Block, cap, base, and drainage quantities follow segmental wall geometry aligned with CMHA guidance.https://www.cmha.org/resource/srw-man-002/
- Price defaults. Block, gravel, and labor defaults are 2026 US national planning averages. Enter a ZIP to scale them, or type local quote prices. Not live bids.

Copy or print from the estimate above. Replace default prices with supplier and installer numbers before you treat this as a budget cap. For walls over 4 ft, ask about permits and engineering first.
